Join Gallery Nucleus for a special one-weekend-only exhibition as we celebrate the artwork of illustrator and graphic novelist Deb JJ Lee. Artwork from Deb's recently released graphic novel, In Limbo, will be on display, alongside Deb's personal work. Deb will also be in attendance, signing books for fans.

A debut YA graphic memoir about a Korean-American teen's coming-of-age story―and a coming home story―set between a New Jersey suburb and Seoul, South Korea.

Ever since Deborah (Jung-Jin) Lee emigrated from South Korea to the United States, they've felt their own otherness. For a while, Deb's English wasn’t perfect. Deb's teachers can’t pronounce her Korean name. Deb's face and eyes―especially the eyes―feel wrong.

In high school, everything gets harder. Friendships change and end, they falls behind in classes, and fights with Deb's mom escalate. Caught in limbo, with nowhere safe to go, Deb finds her mental health plummeting, resulting in a suicide attempt.

But Deb is resilient and slowly heals with the help of art and self-care, guiding to a deeper understanding of Deb's heritage and themself.

This stunning debut graphic memoir features page after page of gorgeous, evocative art, perfect for Tillie Walden fans. It's a cross section of the Korean-American diaspora and mental health, a moving and powerful read in the vein of Hey, Kiddo and The Best We Could Do.

ABOUT DEB JJ LEE

Deb JJ Lee (they/them) is a Korean-American illustrator and graphic novelist based in Brooklyn, NY who began their dive into independent illustration in 2020 after leaving Silicon Valley as a full-time product designer/illustrator. A maximalist first and human second, Deb has a penchant for making sense of clutter, detail, and body language into lush unique compositions, patterns, and bold color palettes to communicate the right emotion to the viewer, whether it is through a book cover, poster, or an entire graphic novel. They have previously worked with Chronicle Books, Disney, Faber-Castell, Google, Harper Collins, LEGO, Procreate App, 3dTotal, and more.
