Curiosities Workshop with Mike Yamada and Victoria Ying

Curiosities Workshop with Mike Yamada and Victoria Ying

October 27, 2012

Oct 27, 2:00PM - 5:00PM

Talented couple Mike Yamada and Victoria Ying have been collaborating on animation-inspired illustrations for some time. Most recently, the duo set out on a Kickstarter.com book project that successfully funded more than ten times their original goal. "Curiosities: An Illustrated History of Ancestral Oddity" is the tale of a brother and sister who inherit an old, mysterious mansion and all of the odd relics that are housed within. Join Mike and Victoria for this exciting workshop as they each share about their process while creating the book and live digital painting demonstrations.

After the workshop, join us for the Curiosities Exhibition & Book Signing (more details)

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Mike Yamada graduated with Product Design degree from Art Center College of Art and Design.  He currently works as a visual development artist at Dreamworks Animation, a concept artist for video games, and a part time college instructor at Concept Design Academy.  Mike has given workshops and lectures at Art Center, Otis, and CalArts.  Some of his projects include Kung Fu Panda 2, How to Train Your Dragon, and as a concept illustrator for Avatar.  He and his wife, Victoria, are the co-founders of Extracurricular Activities a publishing company and online shop.  There, they promote and sell their children's book and various fun side projects.

Victoria Ying, also a graduate of Art Center, is an illustrator and huge fan of all things pretty and cute.  She currently works at Walt Disney Animation as a Visual Development artist and has released a book compiled of two years of her illustration.  "Freckles" showcases Victoria's exploration of watercolors, color pencils, and Photoshop.  The book includes annotated notes detailing the decision making of the artist.  Her style is playful and classic, a perfect combination for story telling. Victoria lives in Pasadena with her husband and their two cats.
