Studio Ghibli Adapts The Borrowers

Just in case you haven't caught up on news surrounding Studio Ghibli's new film, here are some interesting tidbits.

Karigurashi no Arrietty (The Borrower Arrietty) is an adaptation of Mary Norton's Carnegie Medal-winning 1952 novel The Borrowers. Since then, it has been made into live action 3 times--in 1973, 1992, and 1997 (interestingly enough, Tom Felton, who plays Draco Malfoy in the HP films, starred in the 1997 version...have you checked out our Harry Potter blog yet?!).

Who are the Borrowers, you may ask? They're "little people"--4 inches tall, to be exact--who live under the floorboards, and make a home out of "borrowed" human items. In Karigurashi no Arrietty, which takes place in present-day Koganei instead of 1950s England, the two worlds meet when a human boy encounters the 14-year-old Arrietty Clock. A fun fact, Koganei is where a number of Japanese animation studios are located, including Studio Ghibli!   This is Hiromasa Yonebayashi's directorial debut, having served as the key animator for Ghibli films like Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo, and Spirited Away. At 36-years-old, he is also the youngest Ghibli film director!
