New Artist Submission: Lucile Thibaudier

A sweet and charming piece by french artist Lucile Thibaudier.   The carefree Luna seems to be off in her own little world again, daydreaming by the window.

Lucile explains she drew Luna because she "likes the way this sweet and eccentric character puts distance between herself and the world around her. I like her way of not paying too much attention to what the other students of Howgarts do to importune her. On top of that, she gets to be apart in a world of wizards which is already away from the rest of the world."

New Artist Submission: Mary Syring

A seemingly evil and chaotic piece by artist Mary Syring.  Mary wanted to illustrate her favorite villain,Tom Riddle surrounded by the images of his future.  Created with black and gold ink and watercolor on wood, we can see the future Mr.Voldemort being inundated with enemies and monsters of his future including: inferis, deatheaters, snakes, Dumbledore, his fathers gravestone, Snape and Harry's patronuses, and all the horcruxes.
Mary explains what she found unique about Tom was that "he was never actually 'turned' to the dark side. But seemed to have been born into it instead."

New Artist Submission: J. Shea

Where do you think artist ,sculptor, and self proclaimed "assembler of junk" J. Shea gets his inspiration to create these spooky and sinister sculptures?

For his thestral piece, he used an old battered windshield wiper that he found along side of the road while riding his bike for its wings. And for his other 2 pieces, he used vine from his own backyard to give it a more organic quality. Amazing...

New Artist Submission: Alberto Sorrentino Jr.

The gentle half giant and the boy wizard, out for a stroll. Created w/ink, watercolor, and arches paper, artist Albert Sorrentino wanted to make everyone "smile BIG" by illustrating his two favorite characters, Harry and Hagrid.  He goes on to say he tries to "create a sense of joy with the content of my paintings and the way I paint".

Its certainly hard not to smile when looking at Harry's boyish expression =)

New Artist Submission: Katie McDee

Check out these two adorably cute pieces from children's illustrator Katie McDee~!  These paintings are perfect for the little kiddies' rooms, she even makes Voldemort look lovable!

Painted in watercolor, Katie chose to recreate this particular scene because when she first read The Sorcerer's Stone, this was one of her "Woooow, cool!" moments.

New Artist Submission: Jared Andrew Schorr

A super fun piece by SoCal illustrator and paper cutter, Jared Andrew Schorr ~! You may recognize this as the same book that Professor Umbridge passed out to her students during her tutelage as DADA professor.  Adorned w/lots of black kitty cats, this theory ridden book was what spurned the formation of Dumbledore's Army!

New Artist Submission: Jennifer Lewis

Rhode Island School of Design graduate and artist Jennifer Lewis wanted to create an iconic portrait of Harry, so it goes without saying she had to include Harry's ever faithful snow owl, Hedwig!  Inspired by all the rich imagery in Harry Potter, Jennifer illustrated this piece by painting in layers of acrylic and gel medium with a small brush.

New Artist Submission: Anna Bron

Looks like its just another day at Hogwarts!  Created by freelance illustrator Anna Bron, the infamous trio seem to be enjoying a relaxing day with Harry konked out from studying, Ron about to swallow a chocolate frog, and Hermione getting frustratingly annoyed.  This is definitely a reminder of the happier times at Hogwarts, pre-Voldemort days.

New Artist Submission: Matthew Woodson

An intricately illustrated piece by natural history lover and freelance illustrator Matthew Woodson.  Drawn with straight india ink and bristol, Matthew wanted to create the scene when Harry first encounters the doe patronus which he finds to be "one of the most hauntingly beautiful scenes".
He feels that the doe is "Something beautiful that appears, lingers, and then fades into the darkness".  the same characteristics he hopes to achieve in his own work.

New Artist Submission: Jake Parker

Take a gander at these brilliant pieces by freelance illustrator Jake Parker! Jake usually works digitally so this was a great excuse for him to bring out the ol' tools and create something magical!

He explains that he hopes his work "instills a sense of wonder and adventure and the feeling that there's more out there than what is on the page"

You may have seen some of Jake's other work during his time at Blue Sky Studios designing sets and envirornments for movies like Horton Hears a Who and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs.

New Artist Submission: Angela Matteson

Such a heartwarming piece by artist Angela Matteson~!  Created with acrylic on birch wood panels, Angela wanted to pay homage to the magic that all Harry Potter fans experienced throughout the series.

Angela herself has spent numerous late night hours listening to Harry Potter audiobooks when she first began working on birch wood panels and she felt this was the perfect piece to honor those memories.

New Artist Submission: Linh Huynh

A colorful and lighthearted piece by freelance artist Linh Huynh.  Linh grabs inspiration from everyone and everything around her. From the "intricate wrinkles of a distant smile to the glimmering reflection of sunlight in the sea, there is intrinsic beauty everywhere around us".

Although Linh is usually more drawn to a darker subject matter, she wanted to focus on a brighter side of Harry's world as shown with this piece.  Linh writes, "Dobby’s light-hearted personality and somewhat vapid demeanor is reflected in the colorful but transparent usage of watercolor as opposed to acrylics."

Well done!

Dumbledore & Fenrir Sculpts

Always dreamed about having a Dumbledore or Fenrir bust in your home?  Your dream is about to come true, courtesy of artist Alfred Paredes.

Alfred explains that he wanted to make these characters "straight from the book, as we first get to meet them face to face. I knew I wanted to make these two characters because I wanted to have both sides of the fight - Good and Evil. I also wanted to do characters that I thought weren't as well created in the movies as they could've been. Particularly Fenrir Greyback. So I made them as they appeared in my head when first reading the books."

Pretty spot on job I think~!

New Artist Submission: Tony Lombardo

If there was a painting to send shivers up your spine, this has got to be it!  Artist Tony Lombardo truly mastered the deathly embodiment of the Dementor in this painting.  I'm afraid one look into whatever is underneath as it will surely turn me to stone.

Its a good thing Tony also painted the stag patronus~! Good and evil to bring balance into the world..a most horrifically beautiful piece.

Be sure to come to the show to view Tony's third piece.

New Artist Submission: Nicole Gustafsson

A second submission by talented artist Nicole Gustaffson~!   Following her first "Hagrid and Fang" piece, Nicole decided to illustrate the infamously tempermental Whomping Willow.  Nicole explains that she has always been interested in the unusual plants throughout the Harry Potter series and the Whomping Willow is easily the biggest of them all!

Nicole grew up playing in the park across the street from her Nebraskan home whereby her love for outdoor adventures blossomed into a love of nature as well.

New Artist Submission: Alexandre Day

An eerily peaceful piece by French artist Alexandre Day.  Alexandre specializes in working with graphite as seen in this piece of Harry wandering around in a white wintery woodland.

New Artist Submission: Cory Godbey

Such a precious little thing Harry was when Hagrid first delivered him to Dumbledore.  Artist Cory Godbey did an excellent job capturing the troubled expression of a concerned parent in Hagrid's eyes.
Cory fell in love with the Harry Potter series right after the first chapter!  According to his blog, "the introduction of the giant, wild man on a flying motorcycle, and the phrase, 'The Boy Who Lived.' "  That was it for him, there was no turning back after that.

We know how you feel Cory!

New Artist Submission: Megan Hughes

"Welcome to Hogwarts" is the perfect name for this paper cut out piece by artist Megan Hughes.  A graduate of California Institute of the Arts, Megan wanted to showcase her favorite character in the series, the late great headmaster Dumbledore.  Here he's seen giving one of his famous welcome speeches in front of the great hall.

New Artist Submission: Sebastian Mesnard

Check out this charming piece by one of our favorite artists Sebastian Mesnard ~!  You might have seen some of Sebastian's other works at our previous shows such as the Terrible Yellow Eyes show, Enchante, and most recently the Edwards Scissorhands show (which Sebastian curated!)

We love the expression on Harry's face, he looks so lost and vulnerable in the dark forest...makes you just want to give him a big hug!

New Artist Submission: Mary Grandpre

This is undoubtedly the moment we've all been waiting for.......a brief glimpse of what to expect by the immensely talented Mary Grandpre!

For those who may not have heard of Mary Grandpre, she is the artist behind the cover art for all the American Harry Potter books!
Created especially for our show, these are three of Mary's mysterious creations from her new mythical creatures series called "Myth or Fiction: At the Water's Edge". All the pieces in the series are painted with acrylic on wood panel with gold leaf and elements of collage! These photos really don't do it justice.

Love what you see? Good news, we're expecting three more pieces...but those will only be unveiled at the show!

"Pentagus"

"Insectus"

"The Messenger"

New Artist Submission: Scott C.

Check out this endearing piece by artist Scott C.  The bond between Harry and Hagrid has clearly touched the hearts of many.   This painting seems to convey Hagrid as the protective guardian, always by Harry's side.

Scott studied children's book illustration while attending the Academy of Art in San Francisco and even worked as a concept artist for children's video games!

New Artist Submission: Graham Annable

If there's anyone that can bring laughter from sorrow, its artist Graham Annable.  Easily one of the most touching moments in Harry Potter....Dobby the house elf, a most faithful friend to Harry,  sacrificed his life to save Harry and company from the evil clutches of Bellatrix.  Somehow, the sadness of Dobby's death portrayed here through Graham's artwork is significantly wavered by the hilarity of dead Dobby's expression.

Check out some of Graham's hilarious youtube shorts!

New Artist Submission: Tanna Tucker

A touching moment, appropriately titled Until the Very End, San Francisco freelance illustrator Tanna Tucker wanted to capture "Harry's silent bravery and moment of reflection. As he prepares to face Voldemort, the spirits of his family act as patronuses. giving him the courage needed for this final act".
Created with graphite and gouache on BFK Rives, we can see Harry's state of peacefulness ...the calm before the storm...

New Artist Submission: Justin Gerard

Another Harry Potter Blog FIRST!  Artist Justin Gerard has chosen to illustrate an almost forgotten member of the Harry Potter family, Kreacher the House Elf.  Passed down to Harry after his Godfather Sirius's untimely death, Kreacher, although unlikable, proved to be a valuable ally in the end.

Justin did such an amazing job bringing Kreacher to life, it'll surely bring much attention to a commonly overlooked character.

New Artist Submission: Adolie Day

Meaningfully titled, J'ai Deux Amours, French artist Adolie Day wanted to capture the central heroine Hermione, torn between Harry and Ron (symbolized by the owl and the rat).  Beautifully illustrated with watercolor, she explains that for her, Hermione is "the most intriguing character of this saga, one that charms both heroes."
